The Red Flags

The Red Flags Plated Fake As Well As Real With Higher Karat Finish on top of the Gold

Watch out for all the red flags. Hand stamped, no stamp, no manufacturer trademark, tests 14 and then 10 and then 18 depending where you test it. Also, real karat gold can falsely test higher if it has a finish on it. Known 10K will test in the low 14K, for example, but once you gently clean a skinny area, it will test correctly. This is also true with 14 that will test 18 and with 18 that will test 22. Beware of the higher karat finish used by manufacturers. Once you clean the area with the pumice, it will test correctly.

Always stand the item up (never lay it flat) and test the gently cleaned skinny area that is facing up toward you.

Find a skinny, edge, opening, etc where the plating wears away fastest and always file that area to test, or if it's not a heavy piece, gently clean the area with the pumice attached to the pen cap, and then test so it gives you proper reading

Sadly, even spectrometers (X-ray machines) may read gold plated items as real unless you file into the metal. Diluted karat acids can also show plated pieces as genuine. This is why proper testing technique is crucial. Following reliable testing procedures such as filing into inconspicuous areas, using fresh acids, and cleaning before testing helps ensure accurate results.
